Extra Curricular Activities
Netball
Netball club runs during Autumn and Spring terms. Emphasis is on fun, fitness and developing skills required for friendly inter-school games and tournaments. All boys and girls in years 5 and 6 can come along.
Cross Country
Cross Country Club is on Thursdays after school during the Autumn and Spring terms (with respite just before and after Christmas to avoid the inclement weather!!). The focus is on enjoyment and keeping fit but we also participate in Wirral Cup Races and many of our children are regularly selected to represent Wirral in local inter-district races.
Football
Football club takes place on Tuesdays after school throughout the year. Boys and girls from Years 5 and 6 are welcome to attend and the emphasis is on fun, friendship and fitness. Also there is the opportunity to take part in a local inter-school Athletics competition.
Tennis
After school tennis lessons are available to all pupils throughout the year and these sessions are well attended. Mr Collins continues to run this hugely successful club each Thursday.
Sportsability
The Sportsability club runs during a six-week period and is aimed at providing an all inclusive sporting environment, where basic multiskills can be acquired and developed.
Judo
Lessons in judo have and will continue to be available after school during the Spring term. This activity has proven very popular with the children and these courses are always fully subscribed. Letters will be sent out at the beginning of the Spring term.
Dance
After School dance lessons are available to all pupils during the year. A popular new streetdance club is currently in full swing brought into school by Soccer HQ. More dates will be available throughout the school year.
Barnston Dale
Each year the children in year 6 have a residential trip to the Barnston Dale Camp. This trip takes place in June and consists of a two-night stay at the centre, sleepign in dormitories. We hvae been making this trip now for well over 10 years and the children have a really beneficial and lively time. The planned activities include an education visit to Chester Zoo, orienteering and working with the Wirral Outdoor Pursuits Team for a whole day of team-building exercises. With such a large year group we make this trip in two parts. Children find this activity both challenging and enjoyable and it is certainly one of the highlights of the year.
Swimming
We consider that the ability to swim is important for all children, particularly in view of the fact that we on the Wirral are bounded on three sides by water. The children in years 3, 4 and 5 each have an intensive two-week block of afternoon swimming sessions at Leasowe Recreation Centre. A range of official LEA swimming certificates are presented to successful pupils throughout their time in school.
Music
Music is thriving at Overchurch .......... over 70 children have music lessons at school, learning a wide variety of instruments. There are flautists, clarinet players, violinists, guitar players, a saxophonist and an excellent brass group. Year three children have the opportunity to begin to learn the descant recorder at lunchtimes, which for many, provides an initital production to playing a musical instrument. Some carry on with their recorder playing but others are encouraged by their success and learn other instruments. The 'Schools Music Service' based in Liverpool provides tuition on string and woodwind instruments after school on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. Keyboard lessons are also very popular and take place on these days also. Wirral Local Education Authority have peripatetic teachers who visit in school time to teach brass lessons. Mr Burke from the Authority comes to our school each Thursday to give this brass tuition. He also works with the school orchestra at 8:30 am each Thursday in the school hall. At present there are over 30 members from all instrumental families. Both children and staff ahve shown great commitment to the orchestra practice, what a fantastic start to the day. The orchestra has taken part in Music Festivals across the borough and the children thoroughly enjoy this activity. Visitors to rehearsals are most welcome!
We also have a thriving school choir too which meets each Tuesday lunchtime. We sing a variety of songs, from a wide range of musical styles.
